Life’s Playlist….. Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’ by Michael Jackson

Today is Day 2 of the 500 Words Writing Challenge.

In today’s prompt, Jeff Goins instructed us to put our goals for the challenge down and describe what I want to accomplish.

The second part of the assignment is discuss how I plan on reaching my goal and what the long-term goal is.

For me, the writing process has always been a challenge; once I actually sit down to do it, I love seeing the words appear on my screen, it is just the actual “doing it” that sometimes falls short.

So for me, the goal that I want to accomplish through this process is to actually do it. Plain and simple, I want to see what happens when I devote the time to writing each day…. 500 words minimum.

My plan for accomplishing this goal will be to utilize my daily blog posts for my Life’s Playlist feature.

I have been posting to my blog for several years now.  It originally started as a way of sharing family stories and memories.  After my mother passed away it was hard to relive those memories and I stopped writing.

After a while, I began posting songs that touched me and Life’s Playlist was born.  For the last few years, I have shared a song each day that was part of my life.

Last year, at the prompting of a friend, I started trying to write something about the songs I choose through this feature to help the reader/listener understand my reason for choosing the songs I place in Life’s Playlist.

Other than just being songs I like, I found that putting a meaning to the decision enhanced the selection.  I haven’t been perfect about giving an explanation each day, but for the most part, I have succeeded.

Before I can share my plan for accomplishing my goal, I have a confession to make.  For anyone who checks my blog on a daily or occasional basis, you will know that my Life’s Playlist posts appear Monday – Friday at 6AM.

If I am being honest, I have to tell you, I’m not normally up at 6, give me an extra twenty minutes and my feet are hitting the floor.

I write those 6AM posts the night before and schedule them to appear at 6.  SCANDAL!

With that said, I plan on continuing that same process, you will see my posts at 6AM, but just know they are written the day before.

There you have it, my goal is to write a minimum of 500 words for 31 days straight, just to prove to myself that I can and will do it.  My hope is that in doing this it will be the kick in the butt I need to finish that novel that keeps gnawing at my soul.

The plan on how to accomplish the goal is to keep posting Life’s Playlist and to find a song each day that both inspires me and is triggered by the daily prompts provided in the “My 500 Words” challenge.

With that said, today’s song is an easy choice….. Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’ by Michael Jackson, the perfect lead in to a challenge that gives me anxiety and excitement.

Life’s Playlist…… The Way You Make Me Feel by Michael Jackson

Remembering a Free-Wheeling Spring in Life’s Playlist…. We Are the World by Various Artists

When “We Are the World” was released in the Spring of 1985, I was a junior at Georgia Southern College. (Now Georgia Southern University)

There had never been anything like “We Are the Wold” and to date nothing has ever replicated it.

Recorded by many of the music industries top artists, the song was recorded with the entire chorus in-studio together just after the American Music Awards.  During the months leading up to “We Are the World” the continent of Africa had been decimated by drought and thousands of people had died.

As a result the fund-raising effort “USA FOR AFRICA” was formed.

This was the first world-wide call to action, in support of a cause like the ones we see so frequently today.  All monies raised by record and cassette sales (yes, you had to go to a store and BUY music back in the dark-aged 80’s) went directly to the relief efforts.

The song played constantly on the radio and I remember laying by the pool, at the apartment complex I lived in, and each time it would air, 40, 50 and sometimes more of us would break into song.

Those were great days, when I hear this song I think back on great friendships and fun days in the sun singing for a cause.

Enjoy the song and see how many artists you recognize!
