Big Brother Season 15 Finale – #BB15

bb15As I write this we are one hour from the start of season 15’s finale of Big Brother.

Tonight either Spencer, GinaMarie or Andy will win $500,000 and be named the champion of Big Brother Season 15.  For the first time ever I can honestly say I could care less who wins.

I have been a fan of this show since season one and I can say without a doubt season 15 of Big Brother was by far the worst in the series history.   Not only were the players uninteresting, the game itself was overly predictable and just boring.

CBS has some major decisions to make before Sweet 16 hits the airwaves because another year like this one will quickly signal the end of this summer staple.

In my opinion the fixes are easy ones to make, hopefully someone will listen and resurrect the greatness of this show.

NEW GAMES:  One of the major problems with this season was the predictability of the whole thing.  For many of us, (including the cast) we could predict when the Double Eviction would take place, what game was being played next and when outside characters would surface.  Each year we are told to “expect the unexpected,” sadly, there was nothing unexpected about this season.

ELIMINATE THE HAVE-NOTS SEGMENT OF THE SHOW:   Years ago the “slop” competitions were fun, they added an interesting element to the show and were good for a laugh, not anymore.  Now the cast fights to ensure their ability not to be cast as a “have-not” with silly food combinations and inhumane sleeping conditions, this element of the game has run its course.  Additionally, this part of the game has proven to exhaust the characters to their core, keeping them in bed more than as active participants in the show.

KEEP THE TRIPLE NOMINATIONS…..WITH A TWIST:  This year’s addition of triple nominations was fun, however now future casts will expect it and play to the twist.  My thought is, make the triple nomination random, some weeks there are two, others three and you never know when it will change.  Let some of the triple noms be from a Fan Favorite and other times be from America‘s Choice…. mix it up, really be a show where you expect the unexpected.

GET THE CAST IN THE GAME:  This year one of the most frustrating parts of the show was the casts inability to actually be part of the show.  For weeks on end, this cast slept all day and lay around all night…. give them something to do each day, make them get up and get in the game.  If the cast is not made to be part of the show they won’t be…… they are being paid to participate, let’s see more participation!

NO MORE SUPERFANSI consider myself a superfan of Big Brother, it is my guilty pleasure, however as a superfan, I bring nothing to the show as a character.  The best thing CBS and the casting directors can do is get people on this show who don’t know the formula.  Within hours of entering the house, McCrae was already telegraphing the show this year.  Helen, Amanda, Spencer, Aaryn et al brought nothing NEW to the show, they brought predictable insider knowledge that gave us the most disappointing season in BB history.   Send the casting directors out to universities, bars, sporting events, malls get new blood in the game.   Cast the cast without knowing they are auditioning for Big Brother, do something just mix it up.

Big Brother still has life, but another season like this one will put it on life support….CBS needs to fluff it up, freshen it up and go back to the drawing board and make it interesting again.  At one time, Big Brother was a great example of human nature and interaction, this year it was neither, I hope CBS won’t make this same mistake again.

  1. I agree with this article 100%. At the beginning of the summer we were told that the mvp twist would result in a season of no floaters. Rather, we got a season filled with nothing but. The only thing I would add to your list would be to cast people from different walks of life. I feel a huge downfall for this season was that many of the cast were young, naive, and self-deluded. It made for terrible game play (or the lack thereof).

  2. I’ll never call a season the “Worst Ever” because I always feel there are good and bad parts to each.

That being said I like most of your points and I’d LOVE to see a cast of newbies who were CLUELESS to Big Brother’s ways. Unfortunately production has the incoming house guests watch DVDs of the previous seasons while in pre-show sequester. Its like they are training them to behave in a certain way. At least half these house guests had probably never seen more than two or three episodes until they got in sequester.

I don’t mind the ‘superfans’ if they actually play the game – McCrae was side tracked by ‘love’ – I really don’t think there was any other ‘superfan’ in the house. As much as Helen touted herself as one – she was encouraged to audition by a friend who was the actual superfan (of course she researched the show while preparing). Spencer had watched a few season but come on – a true ‘superfan’ watches every season AND the feeds 😉

    • I had always heard the rumor of the DVD’s but never had it confirmed, I think that is just dumb and proves that production does not want a truly legit show… they WANT certain casting and behaviors.

McCrae could have been SO good, it is sad he was attacked by a viscous cougar on night one and never let out of the grasp of those two humungous traps!

    • I agree. The biggest problem of recent seasons is that they’re shown the DVDs and learn strategies of those specific seasons. Anyone who’s seen “Floaters Get a Life Vest” will think that’s an illegitimate way to play (along with most of Rachel’s dupes on Twitter). If you’re going to have superfans, have ALL superfans (and I agree, change things up so that it’s not predictable). And if you’re going to have newbies, have ALL newbies, but don’t show them DVDs. And if you’re going to have returning players, it had better be all returning players, no coaches or fans vs. favorites.

And the biggest problem with this season, more than anything, was that the cast was too young. BB works best when there’s a wide range of ages. There wouldn’t have been so much controversy if grumpy Jerry was playing with Renny, Shellie, Chicken George, etc.

      • yes! The age issue didn’t hit me until a couple of weeks in and then it hit me the age disparity was a major problem…. 20 somethings running the asylum is never good!

  4. What you described in this blog can actually be fixed by adopting some of the twists and formats they use on BBUK!

    – They have weekly tasks for the HGs in order to earn their food budget. No have-nots, everyone has to work for their food as a team…. AND cigarettes are included in the food budget which starts a lot of good fights if they are low on cash!
…….My favorite task from BBUK this year was the remote control task where they had to Pause, Rewind or Fastforward whatever action they were performing at the moment. When they had to freeze for a Pause, BB brought certain family members out to speak to them and try to tempt them to move…. everyone was holding perfectly still with tears streaming down their faces!

    – They also know how to keep the cast on their toes for evictions & nominations. Sometimes 1 person is evicted, sometimes 2 or 3! Sometimes they do fake evictions and put the “evictees” in a safehouse to listen in on the other HGs for a few days.

    – Sometimes they have a head-housemate who does the nominations, but most of the time ALL HGs nominate every week. I think if BBUS used this method for 3rd nomination some weeks, it would force them change up their game and alliances. I’ve even seen weeks on BBUK where the HG’s family members did the nominations. I’ll bet you Candice’s mom would have loved that opportunity.

The one thing that gets old on BBUK is that the viewers get to vote to evict based on who the HGs nominate. MAYBE that would be a really good twist one week for a super “shocker!”, but doing it every week makes it a predictable popularity contest and takes away from the competition. I think that is why they changed the original eviction format for BBUS after Season 1 for this reason.

    • the UK has some great TV, including BB, it would be awesome if the US could adopt some of those ideas…. I get so frustrated when I am told to “expect the unexpected” to continuously get the same old same old.

      Thanks for your comment!

  5. I agree with the main idea of this post. the only thing I disagree with is that I think Helen’s political experience did bring in a new aspect and could have been more interesting if the gross behaviour hadn’t overshadowed everything.
