House Across From Westboro Baptist Is Painted With Gay Pride Rainbow Colors

by Eyder Peralta

Aaron Jackson took inspiration from a 9-year-old kid who stood up to Westboro Baptist Church protesters.

As Mark wrote last year, Josef Miles stood in front of protesters carrying signs that read “God Hates [Gays]” with his own sign that read “God Hates No One.”

Today, Jackson is following through on a project that started about six months ago when he decided to buy a house across the street from the infamous church in Topeka, Kan.

Jackson and volunteers began painting the house in the colors of the gay pride rainbow. Once they are done, they will also add a huge rainbow flag in front of the house.

“It looks like something that should be at the U.N., not in a residential neighborhood,” Jackson told The Destin Log.

Jackson, whose charity Planting Peace, has opened orphanages and bought endangered forest land in Peru, told Gawker earlier today that they have renamed the building “Equality House” and the project seeks to fight bigotry.

As we’ve explained before, Westboro Baptist has attracted publicity in recent years for protesting against homosexuality, abortion and other issues outside the funerals of military veterans and celebrities.

Gawker explains that Jackson’s plan is:

“… to ride the coattails of Westboro’s own media strategy. ‘We’re going to take the negative attention and try to spin it into something positive,’ Hammet said. ‘Instead of millions of children around the world getting this hate message, they’re going to see this message of compassion and love.'”

The Kansas City Fox affiliate reports that Jackson said throughout the day, people have driven past the house “honking horns, taking pictures.”

“There has been no negative response,” Jackson said.

Westboro responded in its usual way. (Don’t click, if you’re easily offended.)

Update at 12:35 p.m. ET. The Proximity:

This video posted on Twitter gives out an idea of the proximity of the house to the Westboro Baptist building.

Tuesday Ten ~ Susy Diaz

In life you have people step onto your path for a purpose, a time, a moment.  These people make major impacts, sometimes they move in and out of your life ike a revolving door, always there when their time comes to pick you up and help carry you forward.

This week the Tuesday Ten respondent is one of those people, Susy Diaz.  I have known her for over ten years, I don’t see her often, but when I do I am met with an engulfing hug that makes it seem like only yesterday that we were last together.

These are the types of people who make life better.  Susy Diaz has done that, her character, humor and steadfast conviction to her truth makes me a better man just for knowing her.  This week, I am proud to have Susy Diaz take part in the Tuesday Ten meme….

1)    Excluding family members, who inspires you? – people willing to be of service in their community.

Susy Diaz

2)    What is your guilty pleasure? – Facebook

3)    If you were to write a book, who is one person you would want to list in the acknowledgements and what would you say? – My auntie.  It would say “In gratitude to my tia for inspiring me beyond the words that fill these pages.”

4)    What is your favorite sandwich? – turkey and cheddar

5)    What is the best professional advice you ever received? – Always take the high road and be impeccable with your word.

6)    As a child, what was your favorite bedtime story? –  It was called “La Cucaracha Martina” –it was about a cockroach – I can see where this might seem just a little odd.

7)    Who is the first Presidential candidate you ever voted for? –  Bill Clinton

8)    What is the one career achievement you are most proud of? – I’m proud of every achievement where I know I have given my best.

9)    If you could spend the day with any fictional character, who would you choose and why? – I would rather spend the day with a historical figure.  Fictional characters are great, but their qualities are seen in everyday people around us.  As far as historical, it would be Abe Lincoln. (But I guess if I had to choose fictional it would be Prince Eric from the Little Mermaid – he’s hot)

10) What is the best meal you ever ate? – Chilean Bass at Nobu in Atlantis – to die for!
