Lent 2012 ~ The Purpose Driven Life, Day One

Today is Ash Wednesday, a day of reflection.  As the Lenten Season began to approach I started to reflect on how I would make this year’s Lent a special time in my walk with Christ.

Earlier in the week I was spending time on Facebook when a High School friend from God’s Country mentioned that she was preparing to re-read Rick Warren‘s “The Purpose Driven Life.”

I read the book years ago when it first came out, it had such a profound impact on my life, I gave copies to every member of my family that year for Christmas.

When I saw my friend’s note it hit me, The Purpose Driven Life was a perfect accompaniment to the Lenten Season.  The book is split into 40 chapters, Lent is 40 days, throughout the Bible the number 40 has been an important one, with that said, today I began my journey.  A journey through Lent and a journey through The Purpose Driven Life.

The book is an easy read, short chapters with quick notes and study guides.  The author encourages “marking-up” the book, making notes in the margins and liberal use of the highlighter pen.  I considered buying a new copy of the book but decided against it, I am excited to see how I have grown in my faith since I first read the book.  I am excited to see what was important to me then and how that mirrors what is important to me now.  I am excited to see how my life has grown and matured since my first journey through The Purpose Driven Life.

Chapter 1 is entitled “It All Starts With God.”  From the first sentence this book makes it known, “It’s not about you.”  Profound words, but the basis for the entire book.  Our lives are a gift from God, it is our duty to live a life that is reflective of the love he gives us and the life that we have been gifted.

My goal is to begin a conversation of the book through this blog.  I encourage you to leave me comments, get in on the conversation and share your views through this exploration of The Purpose Driven Life.

At the end of each chapter is a brief synopsis and challenge.  Today, Day One ~ Thinking About My Purpose

Point to Ponder:  It’s not about me.

Verse to Remember:  “Everything got started in him and finds its purpose in him.” Colossians 1:16b (Msg)

Question to Consider:  In spite of all the advertising around me, how can I remind myself that life is really about living for God, not myself?  I can remind myself through study of the Bible, prayer surrounding myself with Christ filled people who live a life of honor.  I can remind myself of this by staying in the word, study and sharing my purpose as set forth by God.
